Kimberly Lightford (Maywood)
Senator Lightford has represented the 4th District since 1998 and is the youngest African-American woman ever elected to the Illinois Senate. Since her election, she has focused her efforts on education reform and women's health issues. Lightford was instrumental in passing legislation allowing for an increase in charter schools in the Chicago area and downstate, as well as legislation aimed at providing classes to high school dropouts. She has also worked on legislation to increase the minimum wage and provide equal pay to women.
Lightford has been honored with several awards from various groups for her efforts in improving education and working for women's rights. She graduated with her master's degree from the University of Illinois and currently resides in Maywood, Illinois.
